easy swaddling

Honeydumplings mission is to design & create products that soothe & calm baby. Swaddling is a simple solution to making baby feel calm & secure. Swaddling also helps to decrease startle reflex allowing REM sleep - helping baby sleep better and longer.

Since babies cannot regulate their own temperatures, it's important to swaddle them in breathable fabrics - which allow the air to flow around the baby's body. Stretchy blankets ensure a snug, secure wrap without risk of becoming undone. You don't need a gigantic blanket to swaddle. Blankets should be sized to swaddle babies up to 3-4 months when swaddling is no longer safe or necessary.

Our organic cotton swaddle blankets are sized to avoid unnecessary over wrapping and have no added chemicals or dyes - perfect for babies sensitive skin. All of our blankets included step by step instructions for swaddling.

We recently attended the ABC Kids Expo in Louisville, Kentucky and we fortunate enough to meet a lot of wonderful people. We had wonderful neighbours to our booth and talked to a vast numbers of buyers, media, retailers and fellow exhibitors.

One of the highlights of our trip was our audition for the SpokesMoms people for their new series. They were not only friendly and kind but made us feel super comfortable during our audition. On top of our audition we were thrilled to learn that celebrity Ali Landry requested one of our buckwheat baby mats and padded baby hats for her soon to be new baby. The fact that our products stood out among thousands made us very happy. To top it off, Ms Landry was super thoughtful & kind enough to include our mat in her nursery must haves on People.com. What a wonderful surprise! We hope she enjoys using our products once her little one arrives.

Our last post featured photos of sweet baby Finn wrapped in our swaddling blanket and wearing our padded baby hat. Well if those photos weren't cute enough, his Mommy was kind enough to share some more equally adorable shots of Finn enjoying our Buckwheat Baby Mat. This time Finn is relaxing in his gorgeous nursery, taking in the wonders of his new world while just chilling out on the mat. Sigh, what a wonderful life.

Now, we're happy to share that the gorgeous nursery has an adorable occupant, Sara's sweet new baby boy Finn. Last year Honeydumplings was a vendor at Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto. All vendor costs go towards supporting Sick Kids which is a very special place. One of customers was a mother, Stephanie whose daughter Sloane happened to be a patient of the hospital. She purchased our Buckwheat Baby Mat at the time and told us about her daughter. We were delighted to receive an email from Stephanie this year letting us know that little Sloane loves our mat. Testimonials of this nature make everything we do all that more worthwhile. Stephanie gave us permission to share some of her words on our blog and we think you will find it just as touching as we did.

"We bought the honeydumplings mat at sick kids when my daughter was admitted for one month stay when she was only weeks old. Sloane is now 1 yr, diagnosed with Aicardi syndrome. It has been a rough year of seizures, hospitalizations, tears upon tears, but I want you to know that her buckwheat mat, is our favourite thing for her. When we think of our children we want always what's best. That is why Honeydumplings strives to use only natural, soft materials that are gentle and kind to a little ones sensitive skin. From the ultra soft bamboo fabric we use for our mat and pillow covers to the organic cotton Sherpa used in some of our blankets to the ultra light stretchy breathable organic cotton for our swaddle blankets we look for only the finest. Considering that babies spend at least 68% of the time sleeping it makes sense that they are only in contact with materials that are hypoallergenic, free of dyes, super soft and just plain cozy. We like Wednesday and this week another favorite book. Something about bunnies in stories, just so cute.

Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney. Searching for words to tell his dad how much he loves him (and to put off bedtime just an eentsy bit longer), Little Nutbrown Hare comes up with one example after another ("I love you as high as I can hop!"), only to have Big Nutbrown Hare continually up the ante. This was a favorite of my boys and their Dad. Constantly saying how much they love one another "around the universe and back" "to infinity and beyond". Still makes me smile when I see it on my youngest son's bookshelf.

Finally, on the edge of sleep, he comes up with a showstopper: "I love you right up to the moon." (Dad does top this declaration too, but only after his little bunny falls asleep.)

I can definitely say "I like" that I not only get to work with a super talented and creative person but more importantly a wonderful friend. Not everyone can say they love what they do but also get to work along side a wonderful partner, and I can. In amongst talk of decisions regarding business, design, money etc. it's lovely to have someone that will always take time to listen, share, give advice and lend a shoulder to lean on. So no matter what direction Honeydumplings takes and where it ends up, I will always be able to say "I like" that I took the journey with a great friend!

We like Wednesday...and this is a favorite. What better way to bond with a child other than cuddling and reading a book together. One of my all time favorite children's books is The Runaway Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Clement Hurd. I was given this book when I was pregnant with my first child and hadn't heard of it. After my first read I was a big puddle on the floor. A simple, endearing story of a "bunny's imaginary game of hide-and-seek and the lovingly steadfast mother who finds him every time". Both my son's loved it when I read them this story and would often pick it for their bedtime story. Our copy now sits in my night table as my youngest son declared when he turned 4 that the story made him "too emotional", reducing me again to a big puddle. A must read, sure to give you a warm, happy feeling.

Cupcakes have been pretty big for awhile but when I came across these adorable one's I knew they were special. Made by the company Cupcake Occasions based in the UK (darn). The artistry involved in each cupcake is amazing. There are so many wonderful cupcakes on their site but I have to say these are my favorite (especially since I have a huge Muppet fan in my household).

Based outside of Toronto ourselves, it's nice to find other companies close by creating products that we think are wonderful. One of the first places we feel stress and tension is in our neck and shoulders. What mothers hasn't felt as if her shoulders were up by her ears. Let's face it, babies, toddlers & big kids can make us tense. A great way to relieve some of that tension and stress is reflexology.

The reflex area for our neck line is located right along the base of the toes - that line that runs across the top of your feet. Walking your finger along that line applying pressure will help reduce that tightness you might be feeling when you finally get your kiddies to bed at night. Go back and forth several times on each foot and get those shoulders back down to where they were before you had children.

What's not to like about the great site Cool Mom Picks. We've written about them before but had to include them in our "we like Wednesdays". They have been kind enough to review our products several times and have included us in their editors picks and baby shower guide for 2010. Cool Mom Picks isn't just for new moms though it's for all moms, dads, grandparents, aunts and uncles etc. In addition to reviewing baby/child products they also offer guidance in choosing gifts, unique jewellery, travel - the list goes on and on. I've been known to frequent their site when I'm stumped for that special gift or some tech advice that is written in plain English. Check them out, you're sure to find something interesting, unique, informative or just plain fun.

Who needs a baby wipe warmer? No one! There are a lot of products that really aren't necessary for a newborn. However there are those products that you need and use all the time. Swaddling Blanket - check, Baby Hat - check. Two necessities for a newborn. So guess what we did? We took those two very important products, put them together in a lovely gift box wrapped it with pretty ribbon and made the perfect newborn gift. Not only unique & sweet but also a necessity. Plus, each product has that extra oommpf - the baby hat is padded with our unique cushion and our swaddle blanket has a unique swaddle corner to make swaddling easy! We've taken all the guess work out of finding the perfect baby present. Oh and by the way, if you don't know the sex of the baby it comes in our original vanllia color but if you do know there is pink trim for little girls and blue trim for boys. Easy peasy!

This "we like Wednesday" is all about magazines. Who doesn't love flipping through magazines whether it be about style, fashion, decorating, etc. etc. Time is limited for mothers, so having a good magazine to be able to pick up, flip through and go back and read articles, when you have more time, is a nice diversion from all of our other responsibilites.

We like Wednesday is here and we have a lovely nursery to share. We found this sweet nursery on the blog Aubrey + Lindsay's Little House Blog. The room belongs to their adorable son Oscar (love the name) and is the first "boy" nursery we have featured. Another beautiful nursery for our "we like Wednesday". Sonja of the lovely blog Tied with a Bouw created a gorgeous nursery for her sweet new baby girl Allegra. We love how pretty the nursery looks with neutral colors and pops of pink. Sonja created an open closet to display all of the adorable baby clothes, such a smart idea! We also like the great art on the walls, we spotted the LOVE print by Jen Ramos of Made by Girl which we mentioned in an earlier "we like Wednesday" post, along with an adorable dream catcher with a nesting sparrow. Lots of pretty touches all put together to create one pretty nursery for a pretty little girl.

Our honeydumplings padded baby hat has been flying off shelves. Why? Well, first of all it is made of an Oh So Soft bamboo jersey which will also wick away moisture to keep baby's head comfortable and dry. It's gender neutral, padded with a removable pillow which cushions and cradles a newborns tiny head. How smart is that? You can't put a pillow near a newborns face, so why not put it in their hat? We like Wednesday is here and this week we like the the Charlie Unisex Diaper Bag by Soyoung Mother SYM. There are many reasons we like this product. It's super stylish, great design, perfect size and to top it off Canadian. We really wish there was a diaper bag like this available when our children were little. I like the style so much it would be perfect for travel or as a great tote bag. But no more babies for us so we'll just have to appreciate the Charlie Bag from afar. Pregnancy, motherhood and life in general can be stressful. Reflexology is not only a natural, relaxing therapy but can also help in relieving stress. Anxiety, tension and stress can take it's toll on the entire body and cause a multitude of problems. Taking just a few minutes a day to stop, relax and take the time to treat ones self to a little pampering can go a long way.

The solar plexus is a network of nerves and ganglia located behind the stomach wall and controls many functions. Many believe the solar plexus is the chakra point of renewal, centre of energy and important area of emotions. Working on the solar plexus reflex on ones feet can have a tremendous relaxing effect on the body and produce a sense of well being.

So simple, the solar plexus is located on the bottoms of the feet, shown above. Start with the right foot, using your thumb on your left hand and simply walk your thumb in an upwards direction working the solar plexus area. Repeat on the left foot. Individuals who may be experiencing extreme stress may find the solar plexus on their feet is quite sensitive. Take the time - a little less stress in our lives is well worth it.

Tracy Lizotte is the talent behind tml CREATIONS. Tracy's etsy shop is filled with a wide variety of art she has created that would look amazing hung in a nursery or really any room for that matter. Babies have the sweetest little feet and toes. They are not only adorable but the perfect spot to rub and massage to help baby relax. There are numerous reflexes in the toes and since babies feet are so tiny, rubbing the toes covers numerous reflexes all at once. Another "we like Wednesday" Last Wednesday we mentioned the wonderful blog Made by Girl. Well once again we came across some wonderful photos of a house tour posted by Jen. Chassity, author of another great blog Look Linger Love shared photos of her home and they were beautiful. All the rooms looked perfectly put together but let's focus on what really caught our eye - the gorgeous nursery Chassity designed for her daughter. So pretty. Nice subtle touches, some natural colors and a perfect shade of pink. From the art on the walls to the amazing curtains - everything is flawless. I have to say the curtains are my favorite, they are so pretty. I want them for myself. What do you think? Any little girl would be lucky to have a nursery like this. reflexology during pregnancy

Reflexology is a wonderful and safe treatment for women during pregnancy. However most practitioners will advise women to wait until after their first trimester (especially if there is a history of miscarriage) to receive a treatment.

A woman's body undergoes so many changes during pregnancy. She can experience body aches, heartburn, sciatica, morning sickness, hormonal changes - mood swings, depression, anxiety, stress and general discomfort. Reflexology can serve as a relaxing and restorative treatment often helping to lift ones mood and ease any anxieties.

A simple tip to try to help with morning sickness:

Use your thumb to press and walk along (rub) the bottom middle of the big toe starting with the right foot. The pituitary gland is located in the center of the big toe and working on this area as well as the middle portion of the foot (where the stomach reflexes are located) will hopefully help reduce any symptoms of morning sickness. Worth a try or treat yourself and book an appointment with a registered Reflexologist.

One thing I vividly remember after having my babies was how the nurses at the hospital effortlessly swaddled my newborns. I felt so awkward and nervous especially with my first and would wrap, unwrap and start all over again. We created our honeydumplings swaddle blankets to make swaddling easy and effortless. You have enough stress taking care of a newborn, you don't need to be worrying about how to swaddle. Swaddling is so important as it gives your baby a sense of security mirroring the feeling of the womb. Swaddling can reduce colic, fussiness and risk of SIDS. For our first "we like Wednesday" let's start by having a look at the precious LOVE print by Made by Girl. The print comes in a variety of colors but if I had to choose I would pick the Bubble Gum. Soft and pretty and would look perfect in a little girls nursery or room. We also like that most of the Made by Girl designs are made using recycled, post consumer paper. So not only pretty but eco friendly as well. Check & check!

When I had my babies there didn't seem to be as many options offered to parents as there is today. New mothers must find it completely overwhelming when it comes to all of the choices offered from nursery to strollers to diapers. I think I would choose a neutral, calming and soft palette. Lord knows you need some place to calm the nerves once the little one arrives.

Honeydumplings is currently being featured on the site Blush - for the modern mother www.blushmom.com. We answered a number of questions regarding what it's like to be mothers and business women. We were happy to be featured on the site and give some insight into our business.

However, it now seems that any woman who starts a business and just happens to be a mother is now considered to be a "Mompreneur". Not sure where the term originated but we do find it interesting that men who run a company and are fathers aren't called "Dadpreneurs". Business is business and yes, even though we run a company and at the same time oversee all the many facets of our households we consider ourselves on just the same footing as all those business men out there. We are happy to be grouped together with our male counterparts and don't necessarily want or need a distinctive title. We're business owners, CEO's, COO's, CFO's too, just with different body parts.

We've mentioned our love of vanilla in past posts and it becomes even more apparent when one views our product line. Honeydumplings products are only available in the natural vanilla colour. We like pure, clean, natural products. No busy patterns for us. However, we do find inspiration in many different forms, especially nature. There are so many different consistencies which inspire us to take good old vanilla and put a different spin on it by using different fabrics, patterns and textures. So vanilla isn't bland and one dimensional - layering all those textures and patterns makes a beautiful and soothing spot for one to rest and relax.

The current issue of House Beautiful Magazine just reinforces this belief. When top designers were asked to share their tips for arranging pillows on the same white couch - guess who's design caught our eye and was hands down our favorite?

Oh, so pretty! Not boring - lovely, soft, creamy and perfect! This is designer Barbara Westbrook's spin on how to dress up the white sofa. Barbara says "Try Texture" - "there is nothing more beautiful than creams and whites. But when all the shades are similar, you need a mix of textures to keep it visually interesting. This is a luxurious, soft feeling. You want to sink into the pillows, or throw a few at someone" We love it!

Our honeydumplings buckwheat baby mat has recently been awarded the iParenting Media Award. Along with the award, suggestive feedback from the reviewers is also provided as part of the evaluation.

I've mentioned before that flat head syndrome was a constant worry to us when we were first time Moms. When we were developing our buckwheat baby mat we kept in mind how we constantly flipped our babies from one side to the other to avoid a flat head (which our mothers were constantly reminding us of). We knew that since the buckwheat hulls mold to the contours of the head and body this would help to alleviate some of that stress.

We were thrilled to receive feedback that conveyed just how pleased one of the evaluators was with our mat. If our mat can help to eliminate a fraction of the stress a new mother experiences then we consider it a great success!

who likes vanilla?

That's the question my 7 year old son asked when my mother in law listed vanilla as an option of ice cream flavors? My father in law immediatley came to the defence of the flavor my son quickly dismissed as boring. I have to admit I felt the same way when I was his age, always choosing the flavors at Baskin & Robbins that were loaded with marshmallows, chocolate, peanut butter or some weird candy. I would have never given the vanilla a second glance.

Now that I'm older (yikes) and so much more mature (debatable) I realize that poor old vanilla really is fabulous. Sometimes it's nice to not have to have so much going on. Does this match with this, does this color go with this color etc? With vanilla you don't have to worry about that. It's soft, creamy, natural - it goes with pretty much everything. I'm not just talking about ice-cream. All of our products are in natural vanilla which makes it the perfect choice for parents. It will match any decor. It's calming, simple yet luxurious. Perfect for your little one. What baby wants to be overstimulated - or what parent, for that matter, wants their baby over stimulated all the time? I sure wouldn't. They are so perfect when they a blissfully calm and sleeping.

Along with the calming, soothing attributes of vanilla it's also the perfect flavor to add choloate chips too!

I was probably the biggest skeptic of any type of natural therapies until a family crisis put me in a position where I was desperate to help out a loved one. We recently went to Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto. I can't imagine how difficult it must be for a parent who has a child with major health issues. Sick Kids provides such wonderful health care and resources I'm sure it must bring some comfort to a concerned parent - knowing their child is well taken care of.

Honeydumplings is proud to support Sick Kids as all of our vendor costs go directly back into research for the hospital. A wonderful, worthwhile cause.

comfort in a blanket!

When my youngest son was born he received a striped blanket as a gift. The blanket was pink, yellow and white and although soft was made from some kind of acrylic yarn with a satin band. Not my taste, but I used the blanket regardless. He instantly bonded with this blanket and it became his "blankie". This was 7 years ago and to be quite honest, I didn't really know much about organic products at the time because there just didn't seem to be many. None of my friends had them. No one in my mommy group spoke of the virtues of organic fabrics over non organic. We just used what we liked or what was given as gifts.

My son received many blankets as gifts but as hard as I pushed the blue cushy blanket or the nautical striped blanket he always demanded that darn pastel acrylic one. The blanket went everywhere. In the car, outside, inside and always to bed. He loved to snuggle the blanket and place the satin border up to his face. He never really put the blanket over him, just cuddled it. When my son was about 4 1/2 I noticed blankie was a little worse for wear. It began to simply disintegrate. There were huge holes in it, the satin became frayed and so did my nerves. What would I do when blankie completely disintegrated, could I get a new one? Was blankie even replaceable? I searched everywhere for the same blankie but by that time styles had changed and blankie was nowhere to be found. I had to keep cutting blankie smaller and smaller worried that my son would get tangled in one of the giant holes. My son told me that blankie could not be replaced. It had a special feel, a certain smell (yikes) it gave him comfort, he loved it. What to do!

I ended up buying some yarn (yes, the kind that is pink, yellow & white in one ball) and began to knit a new blankie. This one was long, had the same colors and definitely had the acrylic but soft feel. He told me he loved it and took it to his room and promptly used it to wrap his old blankie inside. He could now cuddle the new blanket I knit while still retaining the comfort and security of knowing the original blankie was inside.

I would never take blankie away from my son but now that I'm older and slightly wiser, I would definitely prefer it to be organic.

Having two children each, Louise and I know how stressful it can be when bringing your newborn home from the hospital, especially your first. You know the saying "everything happens for a reason"? Well, I truly believe the evolution of honeydumplings is a direct result of a multitude of reasons. Our company started off from a desire to earn extra incomes for our families but has become so much more. We always knew we wanted to produce products that were for not only beneficial to children but also kind to our planet and I believe we have achieved that goal. We also continue to research and strive to develop new products for our line which keep in line with our initial mission.

However, beyond the business end of honeydumplings, there has been much personal growth and many lessons have been learned. Besides learning about line sheets, html codes, and profit margins we have also learnt so much more. Louise and I have both been through so many ups and downs in the past couple of years and even though there have been tears and sleepless nights we have continued to persevere and come out on top. Whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger is an understatement!!! Life's lessons open one's eyes to whats truly important and makes you all the more thankful for the good things you have in your life. We have both been blessed with wonderful children, (my wonderful husband), wonderful families & wonderful and supportive friends.

Hard work, belief in our products and ourselves, perseverance and a whole lot of faith has helped us to get to this point. I also believe any opponents or roadblocks in our path will experience the karma they deserve. We will move forward and strive to provide our children with strong female role models and continue to build honeydumplings in a honest and positive direction! Looking forward to continuing this great journey!

With the start of a new year one can't help but reflect just a little on the last one. 2009 brought all sorts of ups and downs in our lives, some good and some not so great. However, for honeydumplings the past year is one we are truly thankful for. We had wonderful customers, retailers, suppliers, press - all in all a great start - we look forward to continuing all.

I must also recognize how thankful I am for the partnership Louise and I have developed. I'm thrilled to be working with not only a great business partner but more importantly a wonderful friend. Our partnership seems to be the perfect balance - the ying & yang. Louise's eye for design and detail blends perfectly with my obsession for order and customer/retailer/media relations. We both truly enjoy our work and seem to always find something to laugh about throughout all our struggles.

A big thank you to our families, friends and supporters. Your encouragement has driven us to move forward on this amazing journey - we look forward to sharing it with you.

when will this madness end?

Since late September my family has been battling all sorts of lovely ailments. My eldest son started it off with an emergency appendectomy and from there we have battled colds, sinus infections, H1N1 (let me just say - you do not want to get it!) and now ear infections. It seems to start with one of my boys and spreads to the other and then of course myself. My husband has seemed to avoid most of it but he has also worn a mask, pulled his hoodie tightly over his head and shielded himself from me with a giant barricade of pillows in our bed. I'm the official nose wiper, temperature taker, projectile vomiting cleaner upper - so it's no surprise I have now officially been sick for almost 4 weeks. With the start of colder weather, dark dreary days and being prisoner in my own home its all I can do to keep my sanity. Just when I think the germs have been banished and we're finally on our way to recovery, some little sniffle sneaks back in amongst us and bam! - we're knocked out again.

One thing I have noticed throughout this depressing, snot filled time is that both my sons have cuddled their honeydumplings buckwheat pillows and dragged them from various locations throughout the house wherever they may be lying down and resting. This might be a shameless plug but really the pillows have seemed to bring some degree of comfort. They have been squished and squashed to prop the boys up when they have been congested and coughing at night. Right now my youngest son is suffering with a painful earache and seemed relieved when he lay his head on his pillow tonight and squished it against his sore ear. Makes a mother feel good when something helps their little one when their not feeling well and right now I need all the help I can get!!!!

children's trunk show

photo shoot!!!!

We had a photo shoot this week in order to take pictures of our products and their new packaging. We have eliminated a lot of the packaging to reduce any waste and our carbon footprint.

The shoot went extremely well thanks to our photographer, Sean Bourdeau of Sean Bourdeau Photography. Sean was absolutely wonderful and willing to take so many photos, try so many different things and offer great suggestions!!! I truly believe that man has the patience of a saint. He was so calm and accommodating throughout the shoot - Louise and I couldn't have asked for more.
